The Project

Andy Wren had an idea. He desired to extend his company's product line by delivering a web-based security monitoring solution for large retailers. The result was Encapsulon, a fraud management system designed to pinpoint fraudulent activity performed by employees at the register.

By combining exception analysis on point-of-sale transactional data with recorded digital video, Encapsulon optimizes the time spent by loss prevention managers and security officers to pinpoint fraud in their organization. For many large retailers, internal fraud at the register can account for as much as 2% of their gross revenues. For some, that's over $800,000 per store per year from internal theft!

Each night, Encapsulon pulls down new POS transactions and performs a series of programmable exception analysis routines. Exceptions are grouped by employee activity, and user-defined thresholds insure that repetitious patterns identify the most serious offenses. Security officers are notified of new exceptions, and violation priorities insure that critical exceptions are reviewed by the appropriate personnel.

During the review process, researchers may request pre-recorded video for specific transactions, allowing the researcher to associate a video with transaction activity. Web-optimized thumbnails and streaming MPEG-4 video are used to optimize bandwidth over the network, and exception routing and reporting features round out the product offering.

Encapsulon's security model is based on BTI's Aspen Security Model, while the delivery of data to the browser is generated by an XSL/XML-based delivery Platform. Data "connectors" are designed to talk with IBM and NCR point of sale systems, and DVR interfaces insure that image data can be retrieved from the leading providers of digital video recorders.
